Update: April 2010

We continue to receive positive feedback from our administrative committee in Thalara.  In addition several CARE/Nepal staff from Saipal Youth Club visited the Badi community in December 2009. They reported back to us that parents are committed to sending their children to school on a regular basis.  This includes Naina Badi, our oldest student who got married recently and continues to perform well in her classes.  All students are also attending regular tuition classes supported by Badi Ko Sathi every morning from 7 to 9 AM. Once again, Badi Ko Sathi is grateful to all our supporters for helping us help these students find alternatives to prostitution.

Update: May 2009

In May, 2009, V.E.N.T magazine spoke to the Badi Ko Sathi founders about our organization, the Badi community, the challenges we are facing and our future plans.  To read the full interview, please  click here

Update: April 2009

In April, 2009, Ernst & Young's Asian American Affinity Group chose Badi Ko Sathi, as the recipient of a $5,000 donation. This donation was raised in part through Enst &Young's Affinity Group's charity art auction along with matching funds from Ernst & Young's National Tax Department.  This donation will allow Badi Ko Sathi to continue to support the Badi students for years to come.  On behalf of the Badi students, Badi Ko Sathi would like to thank everyone at Ernst & Young for their generous contributions!

View pictures from Archana's trip.

In May, 2008, Archana Joshee traveled to Thalara, Bajhang to meet the students, parents, teachers, and community members of the village where Badi Ko Sathi currently operates. This was the first time Badi Ko Sathi had the opportunity to personally meet the students and examine the program, and it reinforced our understanding of their needs, their dire social and financial situation, and their appreciation towards the program.

Currently, there are a few small programs run by NGOs to help the Badi women of Thalara, but Badi Ko Sathi is the only program in Thalara specifically implemented to help the Badi children with their education. The community members, parents, and teachers of Thalara were all optimistic about the long-term benefits of Badi Ko Sathi's scholarship program on the Badi community in Thalara. Archana brought back with her the gratitude and the smiles on the faces of these students as a reminder to all the friends of Badi Ko Sathi that your help and generosity is making a difference in the lives of these students in Thalara.

Badi Ko Sathi Supports Nineteen Badi Girls in '06-'07

Thanks to your contributions, nineteen Badi girls were able to attend Kothbhairab's Thalara Madhyamic School in the academic year 2006- 2007. The alternative was being forced into child labor or prostitution. These children, and others like them, still need your support.

The nineteen children range in age from five to fourteen, and attended grades one to five last year. Our partner, CARE/Nepal, has reported to us that all nineteen students were in attendance, passed their exams, and can move on to the next grade level this school year.

The expenses are broken down below. Thalara is a public school so tuition and fees are nominal. Badi ko Sathi supplemented the education with group tutoring sessions, and provided for uniforms, books and stationery, and personal hygiene kits. These expenses are a significant burden to the Badi parents, so alleviating it is crucial in keeping these children in school.
Expenses Rupees Dollars
Tutoring fees Rs. 7,500 $100.00
Educational supplies Rs. 8,740 $116.53
Uniforms and shoes Rs. 38,760 $516.80
Personal hygiene supplies Rs. 6,840 $91.20
Administrative costs to local NGO Rs. 6,000 $80.00
Total Rs. 67,840 $904.53
We look forward to working with you to help assure the Badi children a fair opportunity to be educated.
